"I was diagnosed with a faulty saphenous vein on 10/02/2000. The same week a fellow employee was diagnosed with the same problem. While he opted for using the Doctor covered by the HMO, I used Dr. Owens services. After working a full 8 hour day, I had Dr. Owens operate on my leg using the new VNUS Closure method. Two hours later, I walked out of his office and went home. I was back at work at 5 am the next day. I worked a full 8 hours standing on my feet. I had absolutely no pain or swelling, just a slight bit of a tingle which went away completely in just a few days, I missed no work at all.
However, my co-worker wasn't so lucky. He was hospitalized for three days. His veins were stripped under a general anesthetic, and he was off for a whole month. Even after 4 weeks, he was still having pain, plus he now had twelve scars on his leg. Even though I had to pay the entire bill myself it was less expensive in the long run. My co-worker lost a full months pay plus he still had all the co-pays for the hospital, and all the follow up visits, pain killers, etc.. In the end, he saw that by trying to save a few dollars by using the HMO he actually spent more than I did. I would definitely recommend the VNUS Closure method anyday. It's really worth the cost." - Jan
